drainage problems in backyard

Asked January 3, 2019, 8:41 PM EST

We have a drainage issue in our yard. the rainwater runs away from the hours (thank goodness) and the land slopes from the far side of the yard towards the house. the area where the 2 meet is where the drainage problem is. It runs the whole width of the yard, about 40feet. this area stays very muddy all the time. We are considering a dry creek bed, but there may be other options to consider. We would appreciate any help.

Montgomery County Maryland wildflowers and native plants rain gardens stormwater management

An idea that might work for you is a Rain Garden planted with native plants. It would help the environment by preventing stormwater erosion, benefit wildlife and pollinators while being beautiful to look at in bloom.

Take a look at the "Rain Garden" links on this page from our website:

Your local Montgomery County government is actively involved with stormwater management issues through the Rainscapes program and may be able to help you with this. See here: https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/water/rainscapes/index.html

Thank you so mucj. I'll review tje web sites you sent. Does U of M have any resources we might be able to use? Do their students need field projects to make recommendations? I dont necessarily want them to do the work, but would be willing to let them do soil analysis , draw up plans or something like that

No, the University does not have a program like that, but thank you for offering.

Here is our soil testing page, with all that you need to take a good sample and send it off to a regional lab for professional analysis:
