powderpost beetle

Asked December 22, 2018, 3:11 PM EST

I have a cedar post that I stripped and under the bark there was lots of dust and grooves bored into the wod along with small holes. I haven't seen any bugs but how do I know if they are still there or gone? The post has been sitting in a garage for a couple of years with the bark on.

Thanks for your question. Sorry the assigned Expert is unavailable. As long as the bark remains on the wood, you're probably going to have a difficult time determining whether they have all left the wood. And, it may have become reinfected, if there was no insecticide applied correctly and at the right time in their life cycle. Here is an Extension article with information about those issues: https://citybugs.tamu.edu/factsheets/household/termites/ent-2008/
