Fungus or other pathogen on Tulip Poplar Bark,

Asked December 17, 2018, 4:04 PM EST

There is a large group of 30 or so Tuliip Poplars in the Kengar area of Kensington MD that have a white fungus(?) on the bark, all on the south/sun facing side that seems to be making the bark soft and falling off to the touch. Some trees have it from top to bottom on the main trunk.

We'll need to see photos, close up and at a distance, to be able to diagnose this for you. Just attach some to a reply and we should be able to identify it.

You also may see your "fungus" among the photos on this webpage: https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/lichens-0
