Are lady beetles winter hardy?

Asked December 11, 2018, 10:57 AM EST

UMN Extension Master Gardener, I have Lady Beetles clustering in a corner of the kitchen I intend to paint soon. Can I move them into the leaf litter mulching my garlic in my unheated high tunnel? I have an aphid problem in there every summer. Will they overwinter in there? I am in Zone 4, north of Stillwater, MN. Looking forward to hearing from you. Julia Sandstrom

Asian lady beetles might overwinter in your high tunnel. We can't be sure given unknown variables that may affect their survival, however, we can't think of any reason not to release them there and see what happens.
