soft dahlia tubers

Asked November 28, 2018, 1:36 AM EST

Hi, ."
I recently dug up my dahlias and had washed the dirt off and put them in crates to dry out for a few days. Within those few days the tubers became soft and "squishy." Not mushy, just pliable. Are they ok?
Thanks!

Thank you for your question. It sounds as if you do not have a fungal (mold) infection, and dahlia tubers are less susceptible to ‘rot’ than other underground structures. They should remain somewhat flexible, as this article explains: https://s3.wp.wsu.edu/uploads/sites/2073/2014/03/102607.pdf I would recommend that you continue to monitor them over the winter and remove any that have visible mold or smell ‘musty.’ Hope this is helpful. Good luck!
