Asked November 27, 2018, 9:51 AM EST

I want to know low maintenance/ front of house with mixed shade conditions. Strong grower/ pest resistence. any information will be an improvement compared to my knowledge. I bought a small buy of grass seed from Walmart to patch a bald spot in my lawn. It grew fast & still alive & well. New problem is that on one @ Walmart is aware of the product I puchased.

Good l yck!

Hi. Thank you for your question. Sussex County Delaware is in the transition zone so it can be a challenge to grow turf here. Irrigation is important. We recommend Turf-type tall fescue as a cool season grass for our area. It is has the best heat tolerance and disease tolerance for our area. A Delmarva Blend or turf type tall fescue blend would be best. Here are fact sheets that will be helpful as you make your decision for your lawn:

If you have not had a soil test, that would be most helpful for maintaining a healthy lawn. You can do this at anytime the soil is not frozen. A very cost effective way to improve your lawn. https://cdn.extension.udel.edu/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/22053340/Circular-19-How-to-Take-a-Soil-Sample-for-Home-Lawns-and-Gardens.pdf

You can order a kit online, or take the soil sample and bring the soil with you to the Sussex County Extension office 16483 County Seat Highway, Georgetown, DE 19947 and purchase the kit here in our office. We will send it to the soils lab in Newark , De for you. http://extension.udel.edu/dstp/general-info/

Good luck!

I apologize for the delay in a response. I was having health problems,so I appreciate your patience. We have a great demonstration garden at our office with many plants that do well here in Delaware. It is in its prime in June and July. Best wishes for a happy holiday.
