My gladiola mystery

Asked November 24, 2018, 12:24 PM EST

My husband and I plant colorful glads every year. If we replant those bulbs a second season they always come up yellow! Gone are the lovely reds, pinks, purples. Is there something we need to add to the soil to keep the original colors? Thank you, Ofelia Svart

Thank you for your question, Ofelia. I have been unable to find any research-based information explaining this phenomenon. What I suspect is that the yellow glads are somehow hardier than the other colors, which either died or just did not produce flowers in succeeding seasons. Here is an Extension article with information about these plants and their care: https://extension2.missouri.edu/g6620

If I find something else, I'll write back to you!
