Are Red Oak leaves ok to compost?

Asked November 15, 2018, 2:59 PM EST

I have a huge Red Oak in my backyard. I use the leaves as mulch, but can I compost them as well? They don't seem to break down very well. Thanks, SG

Oak leaves are fine to use in a compost pile. They do take longer to break down than some other types of leaves, so shredding and occasionally turning the pile, will speed the process. Mowing over a pile of leaves or using a reversible blower-shredder are common methods used.
