Too late to fertilize lawn?

Asked November 15, 2018, 12:02 PM EST

I follow your advice of one Fall fertilizer application for a mulched, non-irrigated lawn. Fall got a way from me. Can I fertilize today (11/15) or should I wait until spring? Randy

Unfortunately, you have missed your window for this year and would be best to wait until next spring to fertilize. Research shows that fertilizing in November does not result in the fertilizer going into the grass but instead it washes off the surface of the ground or goes into the groundwater. Ideal fall fertilizing is around Labor Day or between August and to mid October at latest. For the spring, you should wait until around Memorial Day.
