Pine needle mulch - seed germination
Hello, Does the use of dried -brown pine needles as mulch inhibit vegetable seeds from germinating?
Broomfield County Colorado
Thank you for your question. Pine needles as mulch will not inhibit seedlings. If they are in too thick of a layer they can prevent light, air, and water from reaching the seedlings thus impeding growth. The ideal depth is 2 to 3 inches. Here are some fact sheets on mulches: http://extension.colostate.edu/topic-areas/yard-garden/mulches-for-home-grounds-7-214/ and http://extension.uga.edu/publications/detail.html?number=C984&title=Mulching%20Vegetables, and https://content.ces.ncsu.edu/mulches.
