Hello, I’m attaching a photo of a shrub in my friend’s yard. He lives in Denver CO and we are curious if you can identify the shrub for us. Thank you, Carrie

Denver County Colorado aronia

Looks like it could be Aronia prunifolia Purple Chokeberry.

A. melanocarpa is Black Chokeberry

A. arbutifolia is Red Chokeberry

We've been looking at your photo again and have changed our minds about the shrub's ID. While the fruit in your photo looks very like the fruit on Chokeberry (Aronia), the leaf arrangement indicates it is Common Privet (Ligustrum vulgare). The two look similar in some respects but the leaves on the former are arrayed along the stem in an alternating arrangement and the leaves on the latter are arrayed along the stem in an opposite arrangement. Your shrub should bloom with panicles of white flowers in late May. Birds love the fruit.
