Plum tree sick

Asked November 4, 2018, 5:45 PM EST

Hi, we have plum tree that seems to have some sort of disease or pest. The tree is approx. 9 or 10 ft tall. It hasn't given us any plums for a couple of years. Since it's gotten cooler and it's leaves have fallen off, I noticed that it doesn't look right. I've uploaded a couple of pictures. Is there any hope for it or should we cut it down? Thank you!

You've got a decently bad case of black knot. It's a fungal disease that requires spraying. In your case, you need to remove the knots using some sharp pruning shears. Make good pruning cuts. Burn the pruned off tissue.

We have an excellent spray guide to help you with growing fruit at home: http://www2.ca.uky.edu/agcomm/pubs/id/id21/id21.pdf

Check page s 13-14. Hope this helps.
