unidentified perennial in garden

Asked November 4, 2018, 3:41 PM EST

Hello, this is now October, and this has self-sown all over the garden. Now developing what seems to be flower buds but unknown to me. Worry frost will kill plants before I figure out if weed or not.

This looks like a type of ornamental sage (Salvia sp.). There are some types that bloom very late in the season. If the flowers open up before the freeze and you can send us photos, that will help us identify it for you. It does not look like a weed.
