Worms we haven’t seen before - foe or friend?

Asked October 24, 2018, 9:06 AM EDT

Working in our garden yesterday, we found several specimens of two varieties of worms new to us - some about 5 inches long, smooth & fat with a thin angled end; 2nd type, maybe an inch long, slender with ridges around their lengths. Are they helpful or harmful? If latter, how should we try to get rid of them? In case it helps, they were on the same side of a 4’x8’ sweet potato bed.

We do not have research on specific or mutant earthworms. If everything is growing well and you have no problems, then leave them be. Their presence suggests a healthy soil and they are beneficial.
