Fall Sod - do I fertilize?

Asked October 21, 2018, 2:02 PM EDT

We just put down sod this wknd (10/20/18) at our home in Forest Lake to repair a section of our yard that was torn up from a construction project. My question is, should we apply fertilizer? I am uncertain if we want to encourage growth with a fertilizer this late in the fall. We have seen articles that say yes - and some that say no - wanted to go to the experts! thanks so much!

This is Just a little late but the weather is still mild. https://extension.umn.edu/planting-and-growing-guides/lawn-care-calendar

Hi Evelyn,

thanks for responding -- but -- I am not sure I know what the answer is. Yes - we SHOULD fertilize the newly laid sod before snow comes? or - no - we should NOT? can you please clarify?

Wait to fertilize until spring. Keep the lawn watered until the ground freezes. Hope for regular rainfall so hoses can be put away.
