Bugs on Camelias

Asked October 13, 2018, 6:16 PM EDT

I recently noticed black insects on my camellias. What are they and what do I spray to get rid of them without causing harm to the tree?

These are barklice. They are often found on smooth-barked trees and shrubs. Barklice do not feed on living plants. They feed on lichens, decaying organic matter, dead insects, molds, fungi and pollen. No control is necessary.
