Fall lawn seeding

Asked October 12, 2018, 12:15 PM EDT

I called your hot line and didn’t get an answer but I am trying to find out if it is too late to have my yard hydroseeded. It is graded and raked and ready to go but I am getting conflicting advice about planting now. We live in Fort Gratiot mi about 2 blocks from Lake Huron.

I would suggest that yes it is too late to seed now. Late August early September is the optimum time for lawn seeding. It will have the best chance of survival when seeding is done early enough in the fall to become established and accomplish 1-2 mowings before going dormant. It is a roll of the dice at this time of year when weather is the main factor, weather that we have no idea what it will be going forward. Blue grass takes about 2 weeks just to germinate before any growth can begin to happen, a risk I would not take now, especially when considering the expense of hydro seeding.
