My Annabelle Hydrangeas are about 15/20 years old. They have always bloomed nicely. This past year they flopped over quite a bit. Someone suggested I trim them. Is this something you recommend ? And if so - should do this fall or next spring?
Hennepin County Minnesota pruning hydrangeas
Annabelle Hydrangeas put their flowers out on new growth, so they benefit from regular pruning. You will end up with larger blossoms, on sturdier stems (so less flopping!). It's best to do pruning in early spring while the shrub is still dormant to avoid any diseases introduced in the open cuts on the plant. I'm going to link to a great youtube video on how best to prune your hydrangea.
