Serbian Spruce Infestation

Asked October 10, 2018, 8:48 PM EDT

I have a spruce that is infested with boring insects that are dropping shavings that resemble coconut sprinkles from holes in the trunk of the tree. I'll have to remove it but don't know how to dispose of it. The landfill recycling center is probably not the best choice. I don't how what insect is causing the damage. My video is not supported by your interface - mp4 recorded with Samsung S5.

Hi. From the photo it looks like you have a pine sawyer longhorned beetle.

They can also be a vector for a nematode and fungus -

Please refer to the fact sheet for removal - burying, burning or chipping and stump removal. If you have other questions, please contact your local Cooperative Extension Office at https://extension.umd.edu/cecil-county
Good luck,
