Little Bluestem Seeds

Asked October 10, 2018, 3:35 PM EDT

I had some little bluestem seeds for about 2-3 years stored in my garage. 2 questions: (1) are they still good to plant. (2). I have a part of my back lawn that has just been aerated. If I spread the seeds there on top of the aerated lawn in late October, will they take root and grow.

Little bluestem is not a turfgrass. It is a beautiful prairie grass that grows 18" to 3 feet tall depending on soils. It is great for wildlife. It sounds like you want to seed it into your lawn. It is not a grass that can be mowed and expected to become part of a lawn. If you want to turn your back lawn into a prairie then it would work. According to a USDA Plant Fact Sheet https://webarchive.library.unt.edu/eot2008/20080917185612/http://plants.usda.gov/factsheet/pdf/fs_sc... it is best seeded in the spring.
