Chicken Bully

Asked October 5, 2018, 2:36 PM EDT

We have just purchased 3 rescued Chickens 3 of our other chickens have accepted them after a fortnight but 1 hen chases them and pulls their feathers out. What can we do to stop her?

You need to let them establish the pecking order (social hierarchy). The behavior should reside within a few days, but doing anything to disrupt it will result in the repeat behavior after you reintroduce the hen.

We will try this but after 2 weeks she is still being really nasty to the 3 New ones and draws blood it doesn't seem to be letting up!

Are the hens different from the rest, i.e., color, size? Have you considered beak trimming the aggressor to help eliminate the behavior? Another approach would be to remove the hen that is the problem and disrupt the hierarchy the other way? After a few weeks reintroduce her and let things play out.

They are all Warrens and the same size except the new ones havent many feathers being rescued barn hens. Which it makes it worse as they haven't many feathers to star with. We will try separating her for longer.
