An avocado pit is growing out of my compost bin. Now what?

Asked September 28, 2018, 10:55 AM EDT

Hi, I’ve discovered that a small avocado pit has started growing out of my compost bin. It’s about a foot long, with half a dozen leaves. I can leave it there for a few months, but want to remove it before it gets too big to handle. My question is how to proceed. Do I pot it up? Plant it directly into the garden? Will it survive in DC? Any advice really appreciated. I live in Northwest DC, near the friendship heights metro station.

It is too cold for avocados to grow outdoors so you don't have to worry about it getting out of hand. It will die with the winter.
However, some people sprout them and pot them up as houseplants. (They will not grow huge and produce fruit).
