Growth on cabbage stem

Asked September 27, 2018, 3:40 PM EDT

What is the cause of the growth on this cabbage stem. All six of the cabbages I planted had them. They were grown under a floating row cover. Are they galls? I don't see any exit holes in any of the deformations. I cut open two of the growths but did not see an insect inside.

Sorry for the delay.
We had specialists look at your photos and the consensus is that this is what is an infection and distortion caused by Agrobacterium, a form of crown gall, which is soil borne.

You should pull the plants and discard. Though it is soil borne, it does not necessarily mean you will have the problem in future years.
