Sugar like crystals in soil under diseased peony

Asked September 26, 2018, 12:08 PM EDT

Hi experts!

I was cutting back the diseased peonies (about which I have still not received an answer) and I noticed these sugar like specks in the soil. What could that be?

Also should I remove and replace the mulch that was around the diseased peonies, leave it and replace it in the spring, or just leave it? Should I mulch over the cut down stems or leave them be?

Good evening,
The white particles you see in the soil could be calcium or salt. To find out for sure you should have a soil test taken in this area. You can purchase a soil test from MSUE Until the soil test results come back, I wouldn't do anything with the mulch.
