White Pines Dying

Asked September 22, 2018, 2:33 PM EDT

I’ve had several large White Pines suddenly die and I’m looking for the cause. We have many pines and I’m concerned that the problem might spread. I’ve noticed that each of the dead or dying pines has what looks like saw dust on the bark. Please see the attached photos. Your help will be appreciated. - Scott

Hello,

The cause of the white pine decline can be difficult to diagnose in most cases. The cause is usually due to a combination of environmental and cultural factors. The saw dust shown above is most likely from a secondary invader and not the primary cause of the decline.
