What to amend soil with in West Linn

Asked September 19, 2018, 11:25 PM EDT

Hi, we live in West Linn and want to know what to put on our plants and trees, including rhodies, for our yard. We heard that a hardwood mulch is good, but if you have ideas on what will retain moisture, and help the plants become happy, please let me know. We know we need a lot of it.

Thank you for your question. OSU has an excellent publication which should answer your questions (as well as ones you may not have thought of) that you can download here: https://catalog.extension.oregonstate.edu/ec1629

Note that your rhodies (and azaleas) like acidic soil and also have shallow root systems, so mulching them may assist a bit in lowering the pH as well as helping retain moisture in the dry months. Just be sure to follow directions as indicated so it is not too close to trunks/stems nor piled too deeply. Hope his is helpful. Good luck!
