nut hulls and there caseings

Asked September 17, 2018, 8:14 PM EDT

My father has many walnut trees, Old English, Black and a Giant I am not sure of the title; All have black seemingly rotten casings. Some are young trees only 5 years old and they are still dropping black mushy cased hulls? The hulls seem strong but the casing is almost always dark mush on all trees! Is this a soil problem or atmosphere? We are located near I-5 Thank you so much for your time.

Hello, That is completely normal. As the walnuts finish, the flesh between the out husk and the nut casing turns black. In fact, the black flesh was used as a fabric stain. Be careful when handling, it will stain your hands and clothes.
