Strange red fruit trees

Asked September 17, 2018, 6:23 PM EDT

During walks I find these trees with some really odd fruits. They look like raspberries but slightly larger and they stretch out from branches with stems similar to a cherry. Dissecting it I found a mushy interior that smells sweet, almost like the inside of a dried apricot. My dog is very very interested in them and I just wanted to know what it is and if it’s safe for her to eat.

Thank you

This is a Kousa dogwood, an Asian species of dogwood. The fruits are edible by humans, but we cannot vouch for dogs. You should ask your vet about that.
