Minature Lilac Trees dying

Asked September 14, 2018, 5:04 PM EDT

Ten or more years old, well established miniature lilacs are dying. Have brown dried leaves that has spread over the last couple month. One completely dies and was pulled, second has been sererly pruned. Any suggestions of what this is or how to save the other two?

We cannot say for sure what you are dealing with. You did not mention the site and how the plants were cared for. This has been a wet season and if drainage is poor the roots may be affected and the plants will decline. Also, some lilacs are grafted and there may have been some dieback at the graft union.

All you can do is make sure the soil drains well, keep mulch no thicker than several inches and away from the base of the trunk, water during dry periods, and prune dead wood. Monitor the plants and hopefully they will put out new growth next season.
