By TTTF, we assume you mean Turf-type Tall Fescue. This type of grass, along with fine fescue and Kentucky bluegrass are the recommended types for Central and Eastern Oregon. The best place to go for information on local soil-testing, seed availability, and identification of your present grass is the Klamath Basin Research and Extension Center, located at 6923 Washburn Way (Cnty, Rd. #875A) Klamath Falls. The hours are 8 to 5 Monday through Friday. The telephone number is 541-883-7131.The horticulture person there is Nicole Sanchez.
You will need to decide what amount of renovation of your present lawn is necessary after you have some of the answers to the above issues. Total renovation involves killing the grass in your present lawn and starting over. If your present grass makes a good partner to the tall fescue, then partial renovation is accomplished by raking the turf and reseeding thin spots. If the thatch (dead and cut grass stems that mat at the soil level) is more than 1/2 inch thick or the soil is compacted, you will need to power rake and/or core aerate before proceeding. Again, your local extension service can advise you. Good luck with your project!
