Turkey weights live vs dressed

Asked September 13, 2018, 12:24 PM EDT

This next year I want to raise turkeys but have no idea how to figure out what dressed weights. Some varieties weigh up to 38lbs and I’m afraid that they would be too big for most people.

The rule of thumb is to figure 70% dress weight; so 38 lbs X 70% = 26.6 lbs. The average person would typically want an 18 lb dress weight. I would suggest you go with hens and shoot for a 25 lb live weight which would put you in the ball park of what most people would desire.
