Non-spreading grasses

Asked September 12, 2018, 10:29 PM EDT

Will big blue stem and little blue stem spread and get out of control like pampas grass or will they reach a certain diameter and then stop spreading? What about flame grass?

Bluestem is a native prairie grass and is a clumper. Like most of the grasses sold at garden centers, it does not send out runners but gradually the clump gets bigger. It takes many years for the clump to reach a large size. You can always dig the grass, divide it at that point and then replant a smaller clump and plant the rest in other places if you wish.
