Hornet spray safe for an Oregon Myrtle/California Bay treee?

Asked September 12, 2018, 11:32 AM EDT

Hello. We have a large yellow jackets nest inside a hole at the base of our large bay tree. The tree is somewhere between 90 -300 years old. I noted the warning on the can of hornet spray saying it was not safe for evergreens or holly. Would this spray actually have an effect on our tree?

Thank you for your question to Ask and Expert.

I found a product label online for yellowjacket/hornet spray and say the same warning.
Use of this product on evergreen and holly is not recommended as damage may result.
The term "evergreen" used above is confusing.

If it were "evergreens" then once could assume they are referring to plants that are not deciduous, like your California bay tree.

Since it is unclear, I would call the 1-800 number on the package to ask the manufacturer if your proposed use might damage the tree.

Good luck!
