Bare Spot Lawn Rejuvination
Should I be "roughing up" the soil on the bare spots before planting grass seed? Seed is not taking hold. Soil type is Santiago-Kingsley in Stillwater high ground above river.

Thank you for the question. Yes, you do need to prepare the soil for the seed. Rough up the bare areas with a garden rake, spread seed, go over the seed with the back of the rake (non-toothed edge) so that most of the seed is very slightly covered. Some small percentage of seed should still show. Read about seeding lawns here: https://extension.umn.edu/lawncare/seeding-and-sodding-home-lawns
Thank you for contacting Extension.
