Can you give me some details about the tree: live / dead; type of tree; other issues with the tree. It looks like you cut down the tree and then saw the insects, correct?

The tree was dead, the part we cut up came down in a storm. There are 2 tree's on a fence line full of those same holes.Thinking Box Elder, not sure. Thanks for your help!

My colleague and tree expert, Bob, indicated these are the remnants of a pigeon tremex horntail (Tremex columba) https://goo.gl/images/oL0vlD

These larvae live in dead and dying wood. If they are in the other two trees, these trees may be also declining.
