Flies and more flies

Asked September 6, 2018, 2:43 PM EDT

Client stopped in with a sample of flies. There were about 20 to 30 dead flies on the patio table and deck area. What are they? And any idea why they died? Client said they did not spray.

Those look like syrphid flies (aka hover or flower flies). They are a beneficial insect (adults are pollinators and larvae eat aphids etc.).

As to what killed them, if it's been getting colder at night this may just be death by natural causes.
