Hello, I've been given an orchard to pick by a local lady but have no clue as to what the apples are. Can you help identify if I send photos? R.

Thank you for using Ask an Expert for help identify your apples. You are certainly welcome to send photos and we will do our best to identify them.

Be aware that there are 2,500 apple varieties grown in the US (though not all in the Pacific Northwest). Getting close on unknown trees is frequently the best even the best identifiers can do. Many old orchards were planted with a variety not common today and not familiar with today’s orchardists.

You can get hands-on help at the Marion County Extension Service Master Gardeners Plant Clinic at 1320 Capitol St. NE. (Farm Services building--first floor. They are available Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Even the smell and taste can assist in a good identification, so a live person may be the better choice.

Have a good harvest,
