Yellow Jackets

Asked September 2, 2018, 12:26 AM EDT

I found a yellow jacket nest (actually just the entrance hole to a nest) in my front yard. The wasps are busily going in and out and it is very near my walk and front porch. What is the safest, most effective way to get rid of them? I don’t want to pollute my yard with poisons or gasoline (as many people online have suggested) but neither do I want to get repeatedly stung by angry yellow jackets. Can you help?

If the yellow jackets are ignoring people, you may want to ignore them. Remember that they will all die when the weather gets cold and the queen will abandon the nest and not return.

If they become problematic, we recommend spraying with a common hornet and wasp spray. One dose usually does it. Here's what to do: https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/yellowjackets
