Holden Rhododendron blooming in fall

Asked September 1, 2018, 12:28 PM EDT

Are rhododendrons supposed to bloom in fall? I planted two of them midsummer in a new bed and the tags said spring blooms. However, now one plant has a bud that will open soon. I did add copious amounts of compost because it was a new bed planted in clay soil.

Plants occasionally bloom out of their normal season, even when they have been planted years earlier. In this case, however, it may be that the shrubs were from a distant part of the country or grown in a greenhouse previously, and this has thrown off their innate timing a little. They probably will not continue to bloom at this time of year in the future.
