Weeping Cherry Tree Issue.

Asked August 31, 2018, 2:06 PM EDT

My wife and I just moved to this home In December. I am attaching photos of the tree and close up of leaves. Trying to determine if It is normal for the leaves to look like they do and are falling off. Also a spot on the trunk with sap oozing....not sure if that is normal. Thank you!

Cherry shot hole fungus is currently turning leaves yellow and causing spots and holes all over the state. It's because of the unusually wet weather conditions this spring, and this outbreak is abnormally widespread and severe. While cherry shot hole is not unusual, it is usually nothing like we're seeing this year, so hopefully in the future your tree will not have a problem with it.

The oozing sap may be from peach tree borer which often infects weeping cherry trees. They go after distressed trees, and a weeping cherry is not a naturally occurring tree. They tunnel beneath the bark and can cause some dieback, but the trees aren't usually killed by one borer. https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/shade-tree-borers
