Roses Gone Crazy!

Asked August 30, 2018, 6:34 PM EDT

I have reddish shoots of leaves and roses growing from my knockout roses that look abnormal and spiny. The leaves are narrow and spiny, and the flowers are tiny. What can I do? Other parts of the rose bush are growing just fine.

Howard County Maryland shrubs roses normal growth

We looked at your photo carefully and our plant pathologist checked it too. We don't think your plant has symptoms of rose rosette virus. The red coloration in new foliage is normal. With rose rosette, you would see very bunchy growth and excessive thorniness. Take a look at the photos on our website for comparison. https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/rose-rosette-shrub
We suggest you keep an eye on the plants and monitor for any new/unusual symptoms. For now, we think they look pretty normal.
