Mystery Flower

Asked August 29, 2018, 4:09 PM EDT

Can you please tell me what kind of flower (thistle?) this is? I do not think that it is wild/native. It is short (no more than 1 foot tall) on a thick stock that produces 1 flower a year. The flower is roughly the size of my palm with dry, papery white petals. The center is a reddish- purple hue when newly opened. The leaves are extremely rugged and sharp and fill an area that is approximately 1 foot in diameter. It in a perennial, does not spread, and grows in my garden.

Your plant is a thistle, Carlina acaulis, weather thistle or stemless carline thistle, native to Europe. I'm not personally familiar with it, but it seems to have an interesting story, https://laidbackgardener.blog/tag/carlina-acaulis/
