Premature pinecones falling

Asked August 29, 2018, 11:30 AM EDT

Hi, About a week ago we started noticing and hearing many green small pinecones falling from one of our mature pine trees and the others are producing more sap this summer. Wondering if these are weather related or the work of some busy squirrels?

Many green cones falling from conifers this time of year is often the work of squirrels. They will systematically harvest the cones, extract the seeds and stash them. They often work in the early morning and you should be able to observe the squirrels and evidence of their work taking the cones apart if that is the explanation in your case. The cone crop is large this year on several species of conifer.

To determine the exact cause in your situation may require further investigation. Starting with definitive identification of the species of tree. Can you send some photos of the cones, foliage, and other shots of the tree?
