Aphid control

Asked August 28, 2018, 6:41 PM EDT

My garden is inundated with what I think are white aphids. I have used insecticidal soaps and sprays to no avail. My kale leaves are covered with white eggs, I think, and are difficult to wash off making harvesting and consuming impossible. HELP!

These insects on your kale are called whiteflies. Insecticidal soap or horticultural oil, applied according to the label instructions, can help to control these pests, but they are a challenge! With very high infestations that are difficult to control, remove the plants and avoid continuous planting of favored crops (kale, lettuce, cucumber, etc.). Additional options for prevention/control are provided on our website. https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/whiteflies-vegetables
