Rusty dust in the grass

Asked August 23, 2018, 12:36 PM EDT

I mowed my lawn today and there was a cloud of rusty colored dust coming from the lawn as I went over it with the lawn mower. The dust is covering the lawn mower. I don't know what to do about this. This is a residential lawn. I have tried to attach a couple pictures of the lawnmower. You can't see the rusty dust looking at the grass. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

If you look at the grass, are you seeing yellow/orange spots on the blades? The most likely culprit is the aptly named "rust", which is a fungal infection common to lawn grass in late summer/early fall.

There are some good photos here: http://apps.extension.umn.edu/garden/diagnose/plant/turf/discolored.html
And good control measures here: https://extension.illinois.edu/turf/rustlawn.cfm
