Best choice to screen sound from neighboring air conditioner

Asked August 23, 2018, 11:47 AM EDT

We have a lovely deck that sits about 20 feet from 2 condensing units of our neighbor’s air conditioning system. We have installed a 6’ fence to screen the view. It isn’t helping much with the sound. We’re considering adding evergreen shrubs. Wondering which you recommend for best sound absorption. They would be planted in partial shade on the north side of our neighbor’s 2 story house. They would get some direct light in the morning, and dappled light during the rest of the day. Thanks for your help!

The only evergreens that would grow in the conditions you describe are yews. They can grow in semi-shade. However, the air conditioning units only run in the summer. I would like to suggest that you consider viburnums. They are a native shrub and many will do well in partial shade. They grow very fast, are thick and sturdy shrubs. They lose their leaves in the winter but you don't need the sound deflection then.
