Can you identify?

Asked August 21, 2018, 10:37 AM EDT

These plants came up where we had killed off the grass for a turnaround. Does anyone know what this is? Heart shaped leaves. The deer have not touched them. I am in Eugene in the country. Your website will not let me change location. It says Texas. Thank you Teresa

Liberty County Texas plant identification

Thank you for your question. We believe it to be either velvetvleaf, described here: https://www.kingcounty.gov/services/environment/animals-and-plants/noxious-weeds/weed-identification/velvetleaf.aspx or Empress tree, described here: http://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?kempercode=a888 Their leaves look similar but the photo isn’t close enough to the leaves, which can help distinguish them. In either case, not a plant you want to keep!
