What kind of bug is this?

Asked August 20, 2018, 11:15 AM EDT

I found six of these bugs on my potato plant. At first, I thought they were bird droppings because I could only see the brown spot on top, but after closer inspection, you can see the green bug underneath. Every insect has the same brown "bird dropping" look. What can I use to get rid of them? Thank you,

This is a larvae of a leaf beetle, a very large insect family which include potato beetles, but this is not a potato beetle. It may be one of the tortoise beetles. The green part is the larvae. The brown is debris that it puts on its back as a form of protection. If it is alarmed, it may fling the bit of debris off its back.

It is not a significant pest.
