Why did my basil leaves turn yellow?

Asked August 20, 2018, 11:08 AM EDT

My three sweet basil plants were doing great; large and leafy. Over the past week, however, the leaves started turning yellow. Anything I can do to rescue them? Anything I should have done to prevent this?

Basil can yellow for a couple of reasons. Most commonly it's improper watering or downy mildew. If you aren't seeing any fuzzy grey growth on the leaves, it's probably a watering issue. With it being so dry and hot, there is a temptation to water frequently, but you only want to water when the top 1-2 inches of the soil is completely dry. I would let the soil dry out before watering again.
