Intrusive yard plant

Asked August 18, 2018, 12:39 PM EDT

This plant is taking over a portion of my yard and no idea what it is. I would like to know what it is and how to stop it.

Livingston County Michigan horsetail

Hello,

This is either field horsetail (Equisetum arvensis), or a related weed called scouring rush (Equisetum hyemale). Sometimes the common names are used interchangeably. There are other horsetails in this genus, too.

They are both very difficult to control. Repeated cutting or chemical treatments will be needed over several years. Here are some articles for you, some of which discuss chemical controls. As always, please read and follow all label directions and precautions when using chemicals. Thank you.
